Ever Feel Like You Don’t Measure Up?

If you read my blog entry on ‘How to Make Christmas More Enjoyable‘, well, I might have given you a mistaken notion that I do that whole list of things to get ready for Christmas.  But, I must confess that I only do what I truly enjoy. . . and the rest. . . well, it is left undone. . . maybe. . . unless I get around to it.

Like everyone, if I’m not careful, I get caught up in the busy-ness of the season.  So, I have to take a step back and decide what is really important, and what I absolutely have to get done, and then I work backward from there.

I have to go grocery shopping for all the yummy goodies that I enjoy fixing – you know, all those traditional things that you surround yourself with at Christmas, just like wrapping up in your comfy robe in your favorite chair.  It just makes it feel. . . comfy, like Christmas.   No problem.

I have to make the traditional coffee cake for Christmas morning, because my Mom always did, and I treasure that tradition, but that can be done now, and give me an extra hour of enjoyment on Christmas Eve.  Check.

I have to buy a few more family presents and stocking stuffers so I don’t miss out on that joy on Christmas morning.  Easily accomplished.

I have to go to a few parties, because I love the people who will be there.  Can’t wait to see you all.

And I have to save some time this week to turn out all the house lights after everyone has gone to bed, and just let the Christmas lights twinkle while I sit and thank God for all the blessings of life, the happy and the sad, tears and all.  Done.

And I would really like to send out Christmas cards, but as much as I’d like to send out a Christmas greeting, and as much as I enjoy receiving cards, I think I just have to accept that it’s not going to happen this year. . . again.  Do you know why?  Because my expectations are just too high.  I can’t be content with just sticking a store-bought card in the mail, and so my loved ones get . . . NOTHING.   It either has to be my version of perfect, or nothing. Yeah, it’s sad that they have to suffer for my little personal defect, but guess what?   I’m letting it go.

Whew!  What a relief!  What a simple way to relieve some stress – stress that I placed upon myself, that only I could remove.  No one else expected me to measure up – it was an immense expectation of my own creation.  And I came close to being grumpy and punishing my whole family because I couldn’t measure up to my own misplaced expectations.  Ever feel like you don’t measure up?  Change the yardstick!!

And remember that there was one time when someone didn’t ‘measure up’, and God reminded his prophet Samuel, “For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” I Samuel 16:7

Don’t forget to take a moment tonight to turn out all the lights, and count your blessings by Christmas tree light!

p.s.  And I have some more to this story that you can read tomorrow, because it’s just not . . . perfect yet!  Just kidding, it’s just too long for today, so check back tomorrow!
