Why You’re Not Getting A Christmas Card This Year. . . Again

I used to enjoy sending out that special Christmas greeting. One year, I put together a mini-recipe book of some of the special Christmas recipes that our family enjoyed (people are still talking about that one). I always bought the girls coordinating outfits, made a special trip to the photographer, and inserted those cute pictures in a hand-written letter, customized for each family member. . . . awww, now, isn’t that sweet? And if I can’t duplicate that heartfelt effort, well, it just doesn’t ‘measure up’! (see earlier blog post).

At one time, I could do all that. Then the little guy was born, and I haven’t sent a Christmas card since! I just haven’t been able to pull it all together. Some years I had everything except the stationery, or the stamps, or the pictures didn’t come back in time.  I’m afraid there are some people who live faraway — people that I’ve lost touch with (you know – the ones you care about, but don’t get to see very often, and only connect with through a card), that might not even know about him – and it’s not like he’s a baby – he can count his birthdays on two hands now!

The first year I missed sending the cards, I thought I’d wait and make use of those red envelopes by sending out a Valentine greeting, but it never happened. Then, I found some great spring stationery with wheelbarrows and flowers and cute little garden animals, but. . . spring came and went, and no cards were sent. I’m still using that stationery. Then I thought I’d rebel against the norm, and send Thanksgiving cards before the rush of the holidays swept in. But, the years have sped by, and I still haven’t managed to send out cards. Every year I buy the special Christmas stamps, and then spend all year using stamps with the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus. . .

This year I thought I’d get a laugh and send all the family pictures that I’ve had taken over the years, (Stacks and stacks of them! — what do I do with them now?). All my friends would open their card and out would tumble all the family pictures from Christmas past. . . they could watch the children grow up right before their eyes! It would be really funny. . . or really sad. . . but I haven’t gotten around to that either. Even now I’m figuring up how many postal days are left before Christmas? Can I make it? I thought I’d let it go!

Here’s the deal. I love you all. You know it. Merry Christmas. I’m fixing a big ham on Christmas day, and you are all invited. And, there’s no way we’d make it to the studio, so God has blessed us with our own in-house photographer. I didn’t get matching outfits, or make sure everything was perfect, we just shot it one day after church, but here’s a family picture for you. [Note: I told you I would load this Saturday, but when Laurel looked at the picture I was going to use, she said ‘it didn’t measure up’, so we waited and took one on Sunday, and I picked the least ‘perfect’ one for you!]

Just in case you’re wondering, I’m so NOT perfect, and I don’t measure up to my own expectations, and most likely I’ve let you down in the past, too. . . In the words of . . . (I started to say Tiny Tim, but isn’t that the guy who tiptoed through the tulips?). . . the character in Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol – “God bless us everyone,” — in all our human imperfections.  Guess what — none of us measure up.  God knows we are but dust!

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.” Psalm 103:14

And He sent His Son to redeem us and free us from the curse of not measuring up! Embrace and show grace for the imperfections in yourself, and in those you love and cherish, and enjoy the One who came to bring CHRISTmas to us all!

God bless us everyone!
