If you’re just joining us, we’re exploring Proverbs 31 For The Average Woman. In this series we’re studying the true intent and meaning of the description of a beautiful woman who is someone we can admire, but also someone we can imitate — very easily — even the most amazingly average among us!

Here is another quality that even the most simple, least talented, humble, sincere, lovely wife can accomplish!

She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:12 NIV

And here is the original Hebrew:

gamal. . . towb. . . ra. . . yown. . .chay

And the most likely English translation for each Hebrew word:

recompense. . . good/rich. . . bad/evil. . .days. . . living life

In our ‘100 Days to My Anniversary Series, I wrote about bringing him good, and you might enjoy reading that post — so we’ll keep this one simple!

It’s so simple that we should already being doing this!

good. . . evil. . . .good. . . evil

It’s not hard to determine. It’s a yes/no on/off answer. Pretty binary! Think of the scales of justice — on one side is good, on the other evil. Whichever side weighs the most, sinks down, down, down. . . the other side is lifted up. Think of evil as down, good as up!

Making a nutritious and appetizing dinner that your family can enjoy while having godly fellowship. . . good.

Having him come home hungry, tired and dirty to a cluttered kitchen and no food — so that he becomes even more cranky and irritable creating a mood for friction and fighting in the home. . . evil.

Encouraging words. . . good

Criticizing him in front of the children, his friends, your girlfriends. . . evil.

Finding ways together to use family finances to bless the family. . . good

Spending the money before he can get his dirty hands on it. . . bad.

See, it’s not hard. . . it’s either good or it’s bad. . . good or evil. If it’s bringing bad results. . . it’s bad. If it’s bearing good fruit. . . it’s good!

“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. . . The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:43-45 NIV

Anything in your marriage that is bearing bad fruit — bad results — is bad for the marriage. If it’s not working. . . it’s time to change it! (Or you could continue to reap evil fruit for the next . . . oh fifty years 🙁

Sounds easy, and it is simple, but sometimes it is hard to lay aside old habits. The flesh is selfish, and I have found that on my own, I tend to seek my own selfish ways. It is only through daily crucifying the desires of the flesh, and laying down my own will to the submission of Christ (alive in me), that I am able to seek the good. . . and flee the evil.

My problem is my inheritance from Grandma Eve. . . who first partook of the bad fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. . . and ever since. . . we get to choose. Problem is, sometimes our choices. . . reek with the rottenness of evil!

So, get out your scales, place your choices upon it, and see which one rises, then for the glory of the Father, do it! As the good fruit of your good choice rises, let your sacrifice of praise rise, as you bring your husband good, all the while living an abundant life. . . all the days of your life!
