Let's get stretching!

Have you ever felt stretched to your limits?

“To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire [Hebrew word teshuwqah: affection; craving; longing; stretching out after] will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” Genesis 3:16

The Hebrew word teshuwqah is used only three times in the Old Testament.

1) After the curse, even though there is pain, the wife’s longing will be for her husband, as an intense longing, craving [stretching out after him], Genesis 3:16

2) When God warned Cain, before his anger turned to murder. ”Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you [stretching out after you], but you must master it.” Genesis 4:6-7 3)

3) In the Song of Solomon, as the desire a man has for his lover and wife, as recognized by his wife.”I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me [stretching out after me].” SOS 7:10

This Hebrew word teshuwqah, stretching out after, means a strong craving, desire, longing that consumes one, and it is an accurate description of the force of love and desire between a man and a woman.

And here in Genesis 3:16 God gives us another prophetic metaphor of the stretching that will be required by women in order to maintain the future of our family, and even the complete family of humanity.  Teshuwqah – stretching out after – your longing for your husband will require you to be stretched out to your limits, you will continually be stretching out after him, and that stretching will result in an ultimate stretching that will stretch your body, your emotions, your heart, your will, — almost to the breaking point.

Come back and we’ll explore stretching out.  Limber up!
