Countdown #44; Teach Us To Pray

Fine. The key is prayer. You’ve said that for several days now. What does that mean? How do I pray?

I’m glad you asked. :D

You’re in good company. The disciples (you know — those average guys with problems who turned the world upside down with the message of the gospel, by the power of the Holy Spirit) — well, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, too.

So, here is how Jesus taught them to pray by giving them this pattern:

“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.” Luke 11:2-4 and Matthew adds “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen”

Here is a sample prayer taken from Won Without Words, that I pray for you, patterned on Jesus’ prayer.

Our Father in Heaven, Holy is your name. Your kingdom is salvation and restoration, so allow your kingdom to come upon the precious woman reading these words. Thy will be done in her life as she seeks you with a whole heart. Lead her not into temptation to seek her own will, but as Christ denied himself, allow her to follow His example. Deliver her from the evil one, who would seek to fill her mind with temptations of her own rights, expectations and self-righteousness. Give her this day her daily bread, her portion of strength for this one day, her manna from you, a grace that is sufficient to carry her one day at a time. Forgive her for the past, and remove sin far from her, blot it out, renew a right spirit, and give her the assurance that forgiveness conquers failure. As you forgive her, allow the healing rain of forgiveness to wash over her, cleansing her from bitterness, anger, and resentment, as she bestows forgiveness on those who have hurt, betrayed or failed her. As your will is accomplished in heaven, bless this woman by accomplishing your will in her life, restore her dreams, return seven-fold what the enemy has stolen, make her a minister of peace and grace in her home, eliminate the curse of human frailty, and establish a blessing upon her that will flow into the future upon all her descendants, even to the fourth generation. This prayer is offered in faith in the name and the precious burden lifting, yoke breaking, powerful blood of Jesus. Amen.

I encourage you to write your own prayer, as you insert the words I, me, and my into this pattern, or pray from your inner spirit a similar prayer for your husband, patterned after Jesus’ teaching prayer.
