I Love You, Even When You Snore

I remember one night, when I was a girl, sleeping over at my grandparents’ house. I slept on the couch in the living room, which was right next to Grandma and Grandpa’s room – a bedroom without an actual door, but a curtain hung in the doorway instead.

At some point in the night, I awoke to the sound of motorcycles zooming around somewhere close by. I lay there awhile, listening, and those motorcycles just went on and on and on. I remember wondering why there were so many of them and WHAT were they doing!?

The next morning, I told Grandma about the motorcycles. She was quite amused as she informed me that what I had heard was Grandpa snoring!

Fast forward about thirty years, and now I am the one with the snoring hubby. Oh, it’s not bad enough yet that it sounds like a motorcycle gang riding laps around the house, but there are nights when Robert’s snoring keeps me awake. I usually try to convince myself that I can ignore it, but eventually I will give Robert a tender push to encourage him to roll over, as that generally hushes his snores.

On one hand, Robert’s snoring is annoying and distracting and just one more thing conspiring to keep me from falling asleep. But on the other hand, those snoring sounds are evidence that Robert is there, sleeping next to me.

I think of those first eight years of our marriage when Robert worked third shift, and I slept without him most nights.

I think of my sister, and other women married to military men, who sleep alone during long deployments.

I think of my Grandma, who had fourteen years without Grandpa…

I have realized that, yes, even that bothersome snoring is a reminder of the blessing that my dear husband is to me.

I’ll have to make sure those shoves to roll him over are extra gentle :)
