Love is a Choice

One of my favorite writers is nineteenth century Scottish pastor and author, George MacDonald.  He was a prolific writer who wrote fairy tales for children, fantasy and Christian novels for adults, sermons and poetry and prose.

Recently I’ve been enjoying a book of his poems,  and wanted to share with you this inspirational truth about love.

If you would like a copy of the book, The Diary of an Old Soul (Illustrated): Daily Meditations on the Christian Life
and purchase it using this link, a small commission will be received by the blog to help defray online costs. Thank you!

“Love in the prime not yet I understand–

Scarce know the love that loveth at first hand:

Help me my selfishness to scatter and scout;

Blow on me till my love loves burningly;

Then the great love will burn the mean self out,

And I, in glorious simplicity,

Living by love, shall love unspeakably.”

(From The Diary of an Old Soul, June 24, by George MacDonald )

His writing about love reminds me of another of my favorite authors, John the Beloved, who wrote about love in his three epistles, but there is another man who wrote quite convincingly about love even though he was rather a stern and unbending authority when it came to sin and debauchery in the early church.

The Apostle Paul teaches us that love is a choice.

We choose to be patient and kind.

We choose to not envy, or boast, or be proud, or rude, or self-seeking, or easily angered, and to keep no record of wrongs.

We choose to not delight in evil, but to rejoice with the truth.

We choose to protect, trust, hope, persevere. (I Corinthians 13)

It’s like stepping into the light, out of the shadows.

We love because He first loved us.

On any given day, we may not be able to control our feelings, and we may feel or not feel love, but we can control our actions.  Choose to love today!
